Photo Requirements-Canadian Visa/PR Card/Citizenship

As one of the world’s most livable countries, Canada has become a prime destination for tourism, study, and immigration. In recent years, with the improvement of the pandemic situation and the adoption of policies accepting a large number of immigrants, there has been a surge in the number of visa and immigration applications. Submitting a photo is a crucial step in the visa or immigration application process; a proper photo can prevent application rejections, save time, and expedite the application process. To this end, Wetop Immigration Services has compiled the specific requirements for visas and immigration photos set by the Canadian immigration authorities to help everyone complete their applications.

Photos and head size specifications

PR Card/Citizenship

  • The photo must be at least 50 mm by 70 mm (2 inches by 2 3/4 inches).

  • The size of the head, from chin to crown, must be between 31 mm (1 1/4 inches) and 36 mm (1 7/16 inches).

  • On the back, write the applicant's name, date of birth, the date the photo was taken, and the name and address of the photo studio. Here is an example:

Canadian Visa

  •  The photo size must be at least 35 mm x 45 mm (1 3/8" x 1 3/4").

  • The size of the head, from chin to crown, must be between 31 mm (1 1/4 inches) and 36 mm (1 7/16 inches).

General Requirements

  • Please provide two recent photographs of yourself with your application.

  • Photos must be clear and taken against a plain white or light-colored background.

  • The photos must be identical and taken within the last six months. They can be in black and white or color.

  • Photos must not be edited in any way (including beautification, retouching, color correction, etc.).

  • The photo must display a full front view of the head, with the face centered in the photo and including the top of the shoulders.

  • Your face should be square to the camera, with a neutral expression, neither frowning nor smiling, and mouth closed.

  • You may wear transparent prescription glasses. Ensure the frames do not cover any part of the eyes. Eyes must be clearly visible without any glare. Sunglasses or tinted glasses are not accepted.

  • There should be no shadows on the face, shoulders, or background.

Tips from Wetop Immigration Services:

  • Have your photos taken at a professional photography studio.

  • Prioritize keeping and using the unedited digital photo.

  • If a printed photo is required, use high-quality photo paper and the original photo (not rephotographed).

  • Dark-colored clothing is preferred.

  • Avoid wearing glasses if possible.

  • Remove hats and try not to wear any head, ear, or neck accessories.

  • No makeup or wear light makeup.

  • Ensure hair or bangs do not cover the face.

  • The optimal size from the top of the head to the chin is around 35mm.

  • For PR Card or passport photos in print: Include your name, date of birth, the date the photo was taken (not the print date), and the name and address of the photography studio on the back. If made in China, these details can be handwritten. In Canada, studios typically stamp this information, and you may handwrite any additional details. (Avoid using tape or stickers.)
